Taxi Driver I give it 2 stars

1970s cinema, like the 1970s themselves, must have seemed like a better idea at the time. The movie seems to be trying to say something, but we’re not sure what. Good DeNiro, but he’s trapped in a ponderous, pointless film.

Isn’t Taxi Driver the one with the amazing cinematography? Like that one shot from above an apartment hallway?

I put Taxi Driver in the same category with Blade Runner, actually: it was from an era when cities seemed like dystopias that people were supposed to run away from as fast as possible. If nothing else, it’s an excellent guide to American history during a certain era.

I thought most of the “amazing” cinematography was too self-conscious, showy, and ultimately pointless. But maybe it was more impressive when it was new.
